Regional Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

TMC Breast Care Center

Accredited American College of Radiology, the largest organization of radiologists in the nation, Texoma Medical Center's (TMC) Breast Care Center is the region's only Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

With a spa-like setting designed for comfort, patients can relax and feel at ease when preparing for testing. TMC's Breast Care Center offers advanced medical imaging and diagnostic services, such as digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound to help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. The multidisciplinary team at the Center includes technicians, a dedicated female radiologist and breast surgeons.

Breast Screenings

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography, also called full-field digital mammography (FFDM), is a system to detect breast cancer or other abnormalities. It is replacing traditional x-rays with electronic pictures of the breast. These mammography systems are similar to those found in digital cameras. The images the radiologist reviews are sharper and clearer than film x-rays and the patient's mammogram requires a lower dose of radiation. The radiologist reviews and stores the mammograms on a computer.

The woman's experience during a digital mammogram is almost identical to the one she would have during a film mammogram. The only difference she might notice is that her mammogram is now available to her on a compact disc (CD) rather than on a large piece of film. TMC's digital mammography technology uses soft MammoPad® breast cushions, which helps getting a mammogram easier, quicker and more comfortable than ever.

Your best defense against breast cancer is early detection, to be sure to get regular mammograms according to the schedule recommended by your doctor. Remember, do not wear deodorant, lotions, body sprays or powder on the day of your mammogram. Sign up for mammogram reminders >

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Breast biopsies are used to check breast tissue for cancerous cells. Stereotactic breast biopsy uses mammography to help pinpoint an abnormality and cut and collect tissue a tissue sample. As opposed to surgical biopsy, this option gives physicians a better way to examine tiny masses not visible on an ultrasound.

Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a noninvasive, non-radiation examination that uses sound waves to detect disease and locate possible abnormalities in breast tissue. Ultrasound systems are designed to provide doctors with precise images for efficient diagnosis of breast problems. The system enables the physician to perform high-resolution panoramic imaging or 3D scanning in real time.

Nurse Navigator For Breast Cancer Support

A dedicated nurse navigator at the TMC Breast Care Center is there to help women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Our nurse navigator is a specially-trained oncology nurse who understands that patients should have all the information they need so that they are empowered to make important decisions about their healthcare. She will serve as your central contact and support person during this challenging period of your life. She can answer questions, locate resources, help troubleshoot obstacles and help schedule tests and appointments.

Bone Density Screenings

In addition to breast imaging, TMC's Breast Care Center offers bone density testing, which uses a small dose of radiation to produce images of the spine and hips to measure bone loss from osteoporosis to assess a person's risk for developing fractures.

Osteoporosis is a disease of aging that causes bone loss. As many as half of all US women and a quarter of US men 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis, according to the National Institutes of Health. If you are a woman over 50, and particularly over 65, ask your doctor if you need a bone density scan. Women have an increased risk of osteoporosis if they have:

  • A broken bone caused by normal activities, such as a fall from standing height or lower (fragility fracture)
  • Chronic rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney disease, eating disorders
  • Early menopause (either from natural causes or surgery)
  • History of hormone treatment for breast cancer
  • Significant loss of height due to compression fractures of the back
  • Strong family history of osteoporosis
